- 2005 Awards
In
2005, the Terry Lee Wells Foundation awarded a total of $201,210
in grants to 26 organizations in northern Nevada. The
grant amounts ranged from $500 to $35,000.
The
grant recipients and purposes of the grants are:
Angel Kiss Foundation: Support to families of children
diagnosed with cancer.
CADV: services to improve the quality of life for at-risk
women and children in rural Elko County and surrounding areas.
C*A*R*E Chest of Sierra Nevada: Emergency prescriptions
for single, low-income mothers and grandmothers raising children
in northern Nevada.
Community Foundation of Western Nevada: Funds for Family
Court Judicial Benevolent Fund to fill grant requests for
children whose families are involved in the Family Court System
in Washoe County.
Disability Resources: Services to people with disabilities
through Job Development, Supportive Living, and New-to-You
Computer programs.
Family Counseling Service: For Aly's Prom Closet to offset
the cost of prom tickets and other needs of teens who could
not otherwise attend their prom.
Family Counseling Service: Room and board for sexually
abused girls from the Reno-Sparks area to attend the Sexual
Abuse Treatment Summer Camp.
Food Bank of Northern Nevada: Back-Pack Kids Program,
which provides packages of nutritious food for children who
might otherwise go hungry on weekends.
Health Access Washoe County: Provide oral health care
for Washoe County’s uninsured children.
High Desert Hospice: Provide hospice care for patients
and families in the Fernley area.
Horizon Hospice: Provide hospice care for patients
and families in the Elko area.
Nevada Diabetes Association for Children and Adults: Terry
Lee Wells Memorial Fund to support camp programs for children
with diabetes, community diabetes programs, wellness services,
and the facilitation of Nevada Urban Indians Diabetes Screening.
New Frontier Treatment Center: Enhance and expand services
provided in the Women Empowering Women program for substance
abusing women.
Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe: Purchase a new van for transporting
students participating in the Johnson O'Malley Program to
access opportunities for Native American students to achieve
success in school.
Safe Embrace: Shelter upgrade project to provide a
more hygienic, comfortable, and safe environment for abused
women and their children.
Senior Companion Program: Provide companions for low-income,
rural seniors to allow them to live more independently and
remain in their own homes.
Special Recreation Services, Inc.: Camp Lotsafun for people
of all ages with disabilities that provides a therapeutic
experience for the campers while providing respite services
for their families.
St. Mary's Art Center: Youth Press Corps Program for
at-risk students in Virginia City Middle School to participate
in after school activities and expose them to the arts to
enhance their learning and achievement.
Tahoe Women's Services: Assistance in reducing the
incidence and trauma of domestic violence, sexual assault
and child abuse in North Lake Tahoe and Truckee communities.
The Note-ables: Expand music program and create a women’s
choir for women with disabilities to improve their self-confidence
and self-esteem through involvement in music and the community.
The Solace Tree: Support for grieving children, teens,
and families coping with the loss of a parent or other family
member.
Truckee Meadows Community College Re-Entry Center:
Implement Mobile Computer Lending Program to provide laptops
and Internet connections to allow women with young children
to enroll in classes and complete class work from home.
UNR Foundation: Expand the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering
and Science Achievement) Program to an additional school in
Washoe County to help underserved students build a strong
academic foundation in math and science in order to be admitted
to and succeed in college.
Washoe County School District Music Department: Provide
music stands and method books for low-income students in the
elementary schools and music uniforms for at-risk students
in the middle and high schools.
