- 2007 Awards
In
2007, the Terry Lee Wells Foundation awarded a total of $499,700
in grants to 28 organizations in northern Nevada. The grant
amounts ranged from $400 to $200,000.
The
grant recipients and purposes of the grants are:
Angel
Kiss Foundation: support to families of children diagnosed
with cancer.
Association
of Small Foundations: for program innovation supported
by Gates Foundation challenge grant.
Big
Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada: “Reaching
for the Stars”, Mentoring Children of Prisoners program
to help at-risk children overcome negative influences in their
lives and pursue brighter futures.
Bristlecone
Family Resources: Scholarship Program for Women to ensure
access to quality addiction treatment services for homeless
and low-income women.
Catholic Community Services of Northern Nevada: for Holy
Child Day Home to ensure access to affordable, high quality
child care in our community.
Children's
Cabinet: Independent Living Program to assist youth in
successfully aging out of the foster care system and becoming
independent and self-sufficient.
Community
Chest, Inc.: to purchase and refurbish a bus for the Classroom
on Wheels (COW) Bus preschool program for parents and children
ages 2 – 5 years in Storey and Lyon Counties.
Family Support Council of Douglas County: to implement
a Central Filing System that will organize all case management
materials and client information in one, secure location and
provide a greater quality of program services and efficiency.
Food
Bank of Northern Nevada: support for Kids Café,
which provides free meals to children in low-income areas
of Reno, Sparks and Washoe County.
Girl
Scouts: support for the “Girl Bullying: From Awareness
to Action” conference to raise awareness and initiate
action in communities to promote safe social environments
for girls.
Johnson
Elementary School (Gerlach): to purchase books, performances
sponsored by Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, and an
ArtBox from Sierra Arts for schools in Gerlach.
Natchez
Elementary School (Wadsworth): to purchase computer music
software, performances sponsored by Pioneer Center for the
Performing Arts, and an ArtBox from Sierra Arts for schools
in Wadsworth.
Nevada
Diabetes Association for Children and Adults: to fund
the Terry Lee Wells Family Camp North for children with diabetes
and their families.
Nevada
Discovery Museum: for the Capital Campaign to ensure successful
completion of the Build-It gallery.
Nevada
Opera Association: support for the Viva Kids! program
for at-risk students in Washoe County.
Northern
Nevada RAVE Family Foundation: respite services to families
who are caring for young children with disabilities or special
needs.
Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts: to subsidize
artist fees for performances in the rural schools of northern
Nevada.
Reno
Philharmonic Association: Celebrate Strings Program to
provide classical music instruction and accessibility to underserved
elementary school children.
Safe
Embrace: support for the emergency shelter and other needed
services for victims of domestic violence and their children.
Special
Recreation Services, Inc.: Camp Lotsafun for people of
all ages with disabilities that provides a therapeutic experience
for the campers while providing respite services for their
families.
The
Notables: to fund music therapy programs for children
with Down Syndrome, autism, and other developmental disabilities.
TheatreWorks
of Northern Nevada: support for drama classes for girls
on parole from the Jan Evans Detention Center.
University
of Nevada, Reno: for the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering
and Science Achievement) Program at Hug High School to help
underserved students build a strong academic foundation in
math and science in order to be admitted to and succeed in
college; for MESA students to travel to Las Vegas to compete
in the Science Olympiad.
Volunteer
Attorneys for Rural Nevada: support for the Domestic Violence
Victims Assistance Project, which provides free civil legal
services in the rural communities and Indian Reservations
in Nevada.
VSA
arts of Nevada: for the three-day Arts Festival at Lovelock
Elementary School.
Washoe
County School District: to purchase library books and
provide field trips for the at-risk elementary schools (“bubble
schools”) in Washoe County; to purchase books for at-risk
elementary students in the Read & Succeed Program; and
to provide funding for an author visit to Double Diamond Elementary
School.
Washoe
Legal Services: bridge funding for the second year of
the Child Advocacy Program, which provides legal representation
to abused and neglected children within the jurisdiction of
the Family Court.
Wells
Family Resource & Cultural Center: to establish and
operate the Just for Parents program to improve parenting
skills and knowledge of wellness for parents in the rural
community of Wells, Nevada.
