Grants - 2009 Awards

In 2009, the Terry Lee Wells Foundation awarded a total of $500,041 in grants to 37 organizations in Northern Nevada. The grant amounts ranged from $500 to $200,000.


The grant recipients and purposes of the grants are:

American Heart Association: for support of the Go Red for Women Luncheon, which raises money for programs that educate women on the risks of heart disease and how to improve their heart health.

Artown: for assistance in continuing to raise the quality, coordination and marketing of programming for the 2009 Artown summer festival.

Association of Small Foundations: for support of programs and services that help small foundations generate the most impact from their philanthropic efforts.

Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows: to establish the Youth ArtWorks Fine Arts program for disadvantaged youth.

Bristlecone Family Resources: for support for women participating in the "Moms Off Methamphetamine" Program.

C*A*R*E* Chest of Sierra Nevada: to purchase test strips and other supplies for low-income women and children assisted through the diabetic program.

Catholic Community Services of Northern Nevada: for holiday meals for St. Vincent’s Dining Room and Food Pantry.

Child Assault Prevention (CAP) Project: for Elementary Abuse Prevention Workshops for 2nd and 4th grade students in Washoe and Storey Counties.

Children’s Cabinet at Incline Village: to provide gift items and services to low-income families through the Adopt-A-Family Program. Community Chest, Inc.: for operating support of Community Chest programs in Storey and Lyon Counties.

Disability Resources, Inc.: for one Community Trainer for the Supported Living Arrangements program, which teaches basic living skills to children and youth with developmental disabilities.

Education Collaborative: to implement Smarthinking.com online tutorial program for all students in grades 7 ­ 12 in the Washoe County School District.

Evelyn Mount’s Community Outreach: for the Community Outreach Holiday Food Drive.

Food Bank of Northern Nevada: for the Kids Café program, which provides free after-school and summer meals to children residing in low-income neighborhoods in Washoe County; and for the 2009 Holiday Food Drive.

Foundation for Relevant Education About the Law (Project REAL): for training and follow-up costs of taking the Play by the Rules program, a middle school crime prevention program, to northeastern Nevada.

Good Shepherd’s Clothes Closet: to provide free clothing and personal care items to needy and homeless families and children.

House Calls: for operating support for programs that provide seniors with services that meet their safety, security, and emotional needs.

Kids’ Klub: for after school program that provides local underprivileged children with a hot meal, structured activities, tutoring, formal classes and socialization opportunities.

Lyon County Human Services: to support the growth and success of the Fernley Circles™ initiative, which provides a support network and tangible service and financial support systems that will enable low- income families to move out of poverty.

Nevada Diabetes Association for Children and Adults: to fund the Terry Lee Wells Family Day Camp/Halloween Party for children with diabetes and their families.

Nevada Discovery Museum: for the Capital Campaign to ensure successful completion of the Cloud Climber gallery.

Nevada Museum of Art: to support the Dawn Wells Student Film Showcase in July 2009.

Nevada Women’s Fund: to award a Terry Lee Wells Endowed Scholarship to a woman who is a resident of a rural area in northern Nevada, with preference give to a re-entry student.

Northern Nevada RAVE Family Foundation: to support respite care sessions for families caring for young children with special needs, foster children and their siblings.

Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts: to subsidize artists’ fees for the Pioneer Center Youth Programs in elementary schools in Reno-Sparks and outlying areas.

Planned Parenthood Mar Monte: to provide HPV vaccine for low-income, under-served, under-insured and uninsured women in northern Nevada.

Rebuilding Together Northwest Nevada:
to support home repairs and rehabilitation for low-income homeowners who are elderly, disabled, or families with children.

Reno Film Festival: for tickets for at-risk students to attend film screenings and participate in educational panels and workshops during the 10th Annual Reno Film Festival.

Reno Philharmonic Association: for transportation costs for Washoe County School District’s Title 1 At Risk schools to attend the RPA’s Young People’s Concerts; and for the Discover Music program that brings orchestral ensembles to perform at local elementary schools.

Solace Tree: to fund Camp Solace for children and teens who have experienced the death of a loved one.

Special Recreation Services, Inc.: to provide facility rental for Camp Lotsafun, an overnight camp for people of all ages with disabilities that provides a therapeutic experience for the campers while providing respite services for their families.

TheatreWorks of Northern Nevada: for acting and production classes for youth residing at the McGee Center and Kid’s Cottage.

Tru Vista: for the Judge’s Scholarship Program, which provides direct services or purchases to meet the needs of children whose parents are in the Washoe County Family Drug Court.

University of Nevada, Reno: for scholarships for 12-13 year old girls with demonstrated financial need to attend the Girls Math & Technology Program Summer Camp.

Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans: to support the Domestic Violence Victims Assistance Project, which provides free civil legal services for low-income victims of domestic violence in Nevada’s rural counties.

Washoe County School District: for the Read & Succeed Program, to purchase incentive books for at- risk elementary school students who are reading below grade level and working on their reading skills.

Wells Family Resource & Cultural Center: for the Just for Parents program to improve parenting skills and knowledge of wellness for parents in the rural community of Wells, Nevada.
