- 2010 Awards
In
2010, the Terry Lee Wells Foundation awarded a lead gift of
$4 million to the Nevada Discovery Museum as a challenge to
complete the $19.5 million capital fundraising campaign that
will result in the opening of the new Terry Lee Wells Nevada
Discovery Museum in downtown Reno in late 2011.
In addition to the grant to the Discovery Museum, the Foundation
awarded $382,221 in grants to 38 organizations in northern
Nevada in 2010. The grant amounts ranged from $750 to
$82,000. These grant recipients and purposes of the grants
are:
Artown: for assistance in continuing to raise the quality,
coordination and marketing of programming for the 2010 Artown
summer festival.
Association of Small Foundations: for support of educational
programs and services that help small foundations generate
the most impact from their philanthropic efforts.
Bristlecone Family Resources: for support for women
participating in the Co-Occurring Disorder program, which
provides treatment to individuals diagnosed with both substance
abuse and a mental health disorder.
C*A*R*E* Chest of Sierra Nevada: to purchase test strips
and other supplies for low-income women and children assisted
through the diabetic program.
Catholic Community Services of Northern Nevada: for
support of the Adoption Program, which facilitates the safe,
nurturing placement of children needing permanent homes.
Child Assault Prevention (CAP) Project: for Elementary
Abuse Prevention Workshops for 2nd and 4th grade students
in Washoe and Storey Counties.
CitiCare: to provide non-ADA service area rides for
people with disabilities, including frail/elderly seniors,
and to obtain the matching Federal funds from the New Freedom
Initiative.
Community Chest, Inc.: for operating support of Community
Chest programs in Storey and Lyon Counties.
Education Alliance of Washoe County: to implement Smarthinking.com
online tutorial program for all students in grades 7 12
in the Washoe County School District.
Family Promise of Reno/Sparks: to support the Interfaith
Hospitality Network Program, which provides transitional shelter
and comprehensive assistance to families who are experiencing
homelessness.
Food Bank of Northern Nevada: for the Mobile Pantry
program, which delivers groceries in refrigerated trucks and
nutrition educational materials to underserved neighborhoods
and rural towns.
Friends in Service Helping: for the Ross Medical Clinic
Diabetes Education and Treatment Program that serves clients
in Carson City and surrounding communities who have no medical
insurance and limited financial resources.
Friends of Washoe County Library: for program support
of the free Year Round Reading Program for children.
Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada: for financial support
for low-income and at-risk girls to participate in the Babysitting
Business Basics Program.
House Calls: for operating support for programs that
provide seniors with services that meet their safety, security,
and emotional needs.
Junior League of Reno: for construction of the Universally
Accessible Playground in Dick Taylor Park in central Reno,
where children with disabilities will be able to play alongside
their able bodied peers.
Kids’ Klub: for after school program that provides
local underprivileged children with a hot meal, structured
activities, tutoring, formal classes and socialization opportunities.
Kids & Horses, Inc.: to provide scholarships for children
and adults with disabilities to receive therapeutic riding
lessons at the Kids & Horses Therapeutic Riding Center in
Minden.
Nevada Diabetes Association for Children and Adults:
to fund the Terry Lee Wells Family Camp for children with
diabetes and their families.
Nevada Health Centers, Inc.: for construction of a
new Community Health Center in Carlin, Nevada, scheduled to
open Summer 2011.
Nevada Museum of Art: to support the hands/ON! Sunday
Family Program, a free monthly program designed to provide
a structured learning environment for the entire family.
Nevada Women’s Fund: to award a Terry Lee Wells Endowed
Scholarship to a woman who is a resident of a rural area in
northern Nevada, with preference given to a re-entry student.
Northern Nevada RAVE Family Foundation: to support
respite care sessions for families caring for young children
with special needs, foster children and their siblings.
Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts: to subsidize
artists’ fees for the Pioneer Center Youth Programs in elementary
schools in Reno-Sparks and outlying areas.
Rebuilding Together Northwest Nevada: to support home
repairs and rehabilitation for low-income homeowners who are
elderly, disabled, or families with children.
Reno Little Theater: for construction of a new theater
building in the Wells Avenue corridor in Reno.
Reno Philharmonic Association: for the Celebrate Strings
program that provides after-school violin instruction to underprivileged
elementary school students; and for the Discover Music program
that brings orchestral ensembles to perform at local elementary
schools.
Safe Embrace: for the Kids Klub Children’s Program,
which provides intervention services for children residing
with their mothers in the domestic violence shelter.
Special Recreation Services, Inc.: to provide facility
rental for Camp Lotsafun, an overnight camp for people of
all ages with disabilities that provides a therapeutic experience
for the campers while providing respite services for their
families.
Step 2, Inc.: for case management services designed
to move women who are at high risk for substance abuse during
pregnancy into treatment, in order to prevent fetal exposure
to alcohol and other drugs .
Tahoe Women’s Services: for the Children’s Program
for Victims of Abuse, which provides a range of services to
high risk children.
Tahoe Youth & Family Services: for support of the Youth
Drop-in Resource Center for at-risk youth in rural Douglas
County.
The Note-Ables: to fund individual music lessons or
music therapy for children with autism who need one-on-one
instruction and whose families cannot afford to pay the fees.
The Ridge House, Inc.: for individualized services
to women who are released from prison that will assist them
in acquiring skills necessary to keep them from returning
and to ultimately help them to succeed.
Truckee Meadows Tomorrow: to sponsor a quality of life
indicator in the area of educational success.
Washoe Legal Services: to support the Child Advocacy
Unit, which represents and advocates for children between
6 months and 18 years of age who are severely abused and neglected
and are in the custody of Washoe County Social Services and
under the jurisdiction of the Family Court.
Wells Family Resource & Cultural Center: for the Just
for Parents program to improve parenting skills and knowledge
of wellness for parents in the rural community of Wells, Nevada.
Women & Children’s Center of the Sierra: for operating
support for programs designed to empower women who are struggling
to support themselves and their children to create financial,
emotional and family sustainability though a comprehensive
range of learning, support and employment opportunities.
